I learned a lot during the 41 days I was job searching in Chicago. I learned how to cold call and email like a pro. I learned about Starbucks’ Rewards Card (I’m already halfway to the Gold Level). I discovered that networking isn’t that scary, it’s just coffee with a potential new friend. I know all the free fitness classes in the area, which was part of my lesson in living on a really tight budget.
I discovered that most people are inherently kind and what to help. I learned that I am stronger than I ever knew. I was reminded that what we do (our career) does not define who we are (our self-worth and identity). And I saw first-hand the power of prayer and the joy that it brings.
I know 41 days isn’t that long, but it was tough. I’m not gonna lie, I felt like I was hitting a wall in momentum at the end there. I spent a lot of time praying for strength to keep going in my job search, or for it to all be over. There are no words to explain my excitement when I got that phone call last Monday.
I am so thrilled about my new job. It’s the perfect combination of my strengths and new challenges. The learning curve is going to be steep, but I cannot wait. As I’ve seen through this job search journey, big challenges foster growth that you just can’t get during the easy times.
Today I start my job as Social Media Manager at Houndstooth PR. I’m thrilled for my new chapter to begin. I’m also thankful for the one that is coming to a close. It wasn’t easy by any means, but it was good.
